TLDR Version:

This project started back with the introduction of Covid and my introduction to Remote Work. I had spent the previous ten plus years bartending at Fullsteam Brewery in Durham, NC. It was a position that allowed me to have four day weekends every week and an income that surpassed our basic needs. 40+ hour work weeks at less than half the pay was not something I was going to adapt to gracefully. The situation stripped me of what my friends referred to as “Gun Money”, but it really applied to all manner of shiny things.

I explored many options for a second income that wouldn’t break my brain or my spirit. As a person with decades of experience in Graphic Design, Photography, and Screen-printing, selling t-shirts was an obvious choice. I’ve always been a touch sarcastic and have always had a pretty dark sense of humor. I was certain that I could, at the very least, come up with designs that I would be excited to wear. Satisfying my wife’s t-shirt needs would be a bit more of a challenge. Jenn is thoughtful, helpful and kind, the Yin to my Yang. If I love a shirt, Jenn will hate it. WWJD.

I am not an Illustrator, though I do wish that I had that type of talent. I am skilled in Photoshop, good with brush work and colorization and have an eye for design aesthetics. As we grow, our plan is to bring in new like minded artists and illustrators. For now, the t-shirt concepts come from myself, Jenn and a small grouping of friends (they are compensated for their efforts when the products sell). So far, the designs have all been produced by me, but I look forward to a bright future where we have a team of folks with more talent than I have. I do use AI tools when needed, purchase stock art occasionally and do a ton of compositing and finish work in photoshop.

We originally landed on the POD model as our game plan, but after ordering dozens of samples from the top contenders, we were unable to find one that was producing the level of quality we were looking for. If the quality did not match that of a skilled screen-printing shop in terms of feel, stretch, durabilty, color and clarity, we wanted nothing to do with it. I am very particular about the things I own. If something has obvious flaws, it will haunt me. I’d rather go without than to have something that feels inferior.

Over the next year, we invested tens of thousands in commercial equipment, months dialing in our profiles to get things just right, battle testing different brands of ethically produced apparel and refining the way that we prepare art for the best output and color accuracy. It took a long time, but we were able to match, and often exceed, the quality I had come to expect from screen-printing.

Fate either has a way of testing us or it has a very twisted sense of humor. Days after we finally launched our initial website, catastrophic human error (Guilty! It was completely my fault) thoroughly destroyed our machine. Easily fixed if you have deep pockets, but we had already invested everything we had to get to this point. Not willing to accept defeat, I challenged Fate in a very passive aggressive way and continued to make new designs as if success was a foregone conclusion.

Good things come to those who wait! Along the way, I was eventually able to form a professional relationship with a print partner capable of very impressive overall quality. With this freshly minted friendship, our website is once again LIVE! When we are able to get our in-house printing operation back up, we will begin adding more complex designs that are too complicated for most folks to print, oversized prints to allow for larger prints (Big & Tall / Back Prints / Hoodies / Bags) and maybe even stickers!

The last piece of the puzzle was always the most important one. It’s you! Your job, if you choose to accept it, is to find a shirt or three that you love, buy them, wear the hell out of them and slowly fall in love with your new favorite tees.
